Summary

We use and develop programs for steady-state and transient flow. The programs are used by us and by owners of larger district heating and cooling systems. We also work in mining, black water, oil and process industry.

Examples of work

  • Hydraulic analyses of present or future district heating and cooling systems. Systems are “test driven” in models that show hydraulic behaviour at various operating points. Water-hammer problems are addressed with our experience. More than half of the district heating water in Sweden is in our computer models. About two thirds of the power in district cooling systems in Sweden is simulated by us.
  • Surge analyses (water hammer) in various systems — prevention when possible, accident investigation when needed.
  • Education about district heating and cooling systems. Around a thousand people have taken our courses — mostly operating staff, but also consultants from FVB, SWECO, ÅF and others.

Computer programs

We use a program package named PFC/Xram on a Linux platform. It includes PFC-SF (Pipe Flow Calculations – Steady Flow), PFC-TF (Pipe Flow Calculations – Transient Flow), and Xram.

PFC-SF/TF originate from a research project at Chalmers University of Technology about 40 years ago. Basic programming was done by Bror-Arne Gustafson. The tools were developed to calculate and simulate district heating systems, but can simulate most complex pipe systems as long as the flow can be treated as incompressible.

Xram is a shell for handling PFC-SF/TF, developed by Hydroram AB. Since 2004 the package has been owned and developed by Hydroram AB. Since 2021 the package is owned and developed by Nxity, who are building a more user-friendly and advanced shell named PFC PROwww.pfcpro.com.
